Three years ago, I became acquainted with a girl from Belarus. Her English wasn't perfect but she was very eager to learn. She lived in a small town, a countryside, in Belarus and the pictures she took and uploaded are of her snowy surroundings. We ended up becoming acquaintances after she came to me and expressed how she liked my watercolour works. One day, she emailed me personally and asked to teach her English. I agreed and she sent many gratitude for the offer. This soon became days and then weeks... and finally months since she last contacted me.
... which reminds me. The last message she left me went something like this:
"I'm so happy! I'm going to Russia! I'm going to have a happy life!"
It didn't really bother me too much until I became aware of sex trafficking problem in Eastern Europe.
A story of a trafficking victim from a similar place reminds me so much of this girl. Right now, I have no way to contact her, but it's still quite chilling to think what could have happened to her. I may be wrong and be overreacting to the situation but it's something I want to get off my chest.
